Cherry is an Apple Original Film directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and stars Tom Holland as an unnamed army veteran with PTSD who after becoming addicted to opiods, begins robbing banks to pay for his addiction. The film also stars Ciara Bravo, Jeff Wahlberg, and Jack Reynor.
I thought that this film was outstanding. Tom Holland and Ciara Bravo give career-defining performances. Holland completely disappears into his role, giving a performance that is not only a complete 180 from anything he's done in the past, but is definitely up there with some of the best performances I've ever seen from an actor. Ciara Bravo is a fantastic find, and if she can give more commanding performances like this, I believe she has a great future in the film industry.
It also really helps that the storytelling is off the charts. Similar to their work on Avengers: Endgame, the way that the Russo Brothers are able to tell this story is just absolutely mesmerising. The way they're able to handle extreme tone shifts and emotional punches is just absolutely incredible. The pacing here is pure perfection. 140 minutes is a lot to ask for an average viewer, but once the film starts, it never slowed down once. Even when we take a break from the tense moments, it never slowed down and kept my attention span for the entire runtime. The film is also incredible from a technical perspective. From the way every scene is perfectly framed the the immaculate editing, this film is truly a sight to behold.
I have one and only one small nitpick with this entire film, and that would be the ending. I personally felt that the last 10 minutes of this film felt a little bit rushed, especially with a pretty significant time jump. If there had just been one more scene put in-between that time skip, I would have had no problems.
In the end, I thought that this film was near-perfection. The storytelling is pure brilliance and Tom Holland and Ciara Bravo completely immersed me into the story. The cinematography and editing are phenomenal, and the pacing is marvelous. One of the best film of 2021 so far and a film that I highly recommend.
Final Grade: A
