Promising Young Woman is written and directed by Emerald Fennell in her directorial debut and stars Carey Mulligan as Cassie. A young woman who after being traumatized by a tragic event in her past, seeks out vengeance against those who cross her path.
After seeing the first trailer for this film back in January, this was definitely one of my most anticipated films of this year, so to say I was angry that it got delayed due to the pandemic would be an understatement. Which is why I was so happy to finally get a chance to see this film over the past weekend. This film is quite extraordinary in a number of ways. Carey Mulligan easily gives the best performances of her career. The raw and unrecognizable nature of her performances is key to the message that this film is trying to spread, and she absolutely nailed it. The film as a whole is also really well paced. I was never bored once watching this movie and it kept me engaged throughout the entire runtime.
Emerald Fennell who you may know for her writing on the TV series “Killing Eve”, does an excellent job behind the camera. Her script is incredibly well written, and once again really elevates the message she's trying to convey. Her direction is also top notch. She knows exactly how she wants her film to feel and look, and she overall just did a phenomenal job! This film is also extraordinary from a technical aspect. The cinematography here is absolutely fantastic. The framing and color pallette were stunning, and gives the film a very sleek tone which is another factor that makes this film so immersive.
Something else I really want to discuss about this film is the ending. I won't spoil anything in this review, but the ending of this film is something I did not see coming and I was very shocked when it occurred. I can definitely see some people being divided over it, however to me it was just another factor to help boost the film's commentary on rape culture.
Overall this film is one of the best I've seen this year. Carey Mulligan gives a career defining performance, the film is beautifully shot, immesive, well paced, well edited, and features an excellent screenplay and top notch direction from Emerald Fennell. This is a must watch film that reminded me why I love movies.
Final Grade: A+
