The Broken Hearts Gallery is written and directed by Natalie Krinsky in her directorial debut and stars Geraldine Viswanathan as Lucy, a New York art gallery assistant who decides to create an exhibit for souvenirs from past relationships after getting dumped by her latest boyfriend.
My main praise regarding this film would have to be the cast. Everyone in this cast does an excellent job in the film, and they all have fantastic chemistry together. The main standout here is Viswanathan as Lucy. She's on an excellent streak so far and I hope she continues to get more work. The supporting cast here is also excellent, the main standouts in this area are Molly Gordon as Amanda, one of Lucy's friends. As well as Bernadette Peters as Eva Woolf, Lucy's boss at the art gallery.
Something else I really loved about the film is the somewhat original premise. Despite being a bit predictable, this film dosen’t feel like anything you've seen before and it was refreshing to see an original premise in a romantic comedy. All of the jokes in here also land very well. I found myself laughing several times throughout the film, which dosen’t happen often with romantic comedies. One other thing I wanted to mention here is the soundtrack. The songs fit perfectly with every scene and I found myself dancing in my seat along with laughing numerous times!
While it may be entertaining, this film does have a few problems that I'd like to discuss. My main issue with this film is the pacing. For about sixety percent of the film this film is really well paced, but for the other fourty percent this film can feel really slow, so I found myself checking my watch a couple of times. Another issue I have with this film is the screenplay. Despite the numerous attempts at humor which lands most of the the time, I felt that there simply wasn't enough. The only other issue I have with this film is in regards to one of the performances. That performance is Dacre Montgomery as Nick, the guy who Lucy starts the gallery with and her soon to be love interest. I felt that he didn’t put enough effort into his performance and that somebody else could've played the role better.
Even with the flaws I mentioned this is a really enjoyable movie. The cast is terrific and everyone has great chemistry, it has a refreshing and original concept, and it has several laught out loud moments. My only problems are the uneven pacing and not enough humor in the screenplay. This is definitely a movie that I'd recommend watching because it's an excellent comfort movie!
Final Grade: B+
